Collaboration between Orchid Park Secondary School, Singapore and Mount Litera Zee School , Alwar

Orchid Park Secondary School, Singapore is pleased to collaborate with Mount Litera Zee School , Alwar to promote environmental awareness among our 
students. In Orchid Park Secondary School (OPSS),  there is a school wide effort to promote 
recycling and waste management knowledge through many activities initiated by the 
school's green club students. We are pleased to share our environmental activities that 
have been conducted over the past year.

Outreach to a community library 


The school partnered NLB in the Public Outreach at Sengkang Library on 8 March 2014. The Environment Club members conducted a workshop on the making of crafts and terrariums using recycled materials to the public.
Assembly talk
In 2014, students from our school Environment Club gave an assembly talk to the school population to raise awareness of the harmful effects of air, water and land pollution and to promote recycling efforts among the students.  Towards the end of the talk, every student was given a cardboard-made hand to write down how they would pledge to conserve our environment. The hands were then collected and displayed at our school foyer during the YED week for our school population to view. In 2015, the talk focussed on waste management and Pulau Semakau landfill in Singapore.
Newspaper Recycling





The green Club initiated a paper recycling program through the collection of old newspaper. All students in Orchid Park subscribe to the Straits Times and their Mother Tongue newspaper weekly. As most of the newspapers are simply thrown away after reading, the Green Club has taken the lead to collect all these newspaper from the whole school. Such collections are done on a termly basis.

Recycling bins (one for cans, paper and plastic) are placed at three locations. The bins were clearly labelled for students to recycle the waste. Recycling posters are put up around the school to encourage students to recycle.

Teachers’ Recycling



2 boxes were put next to each printer in the staff room. 1 box labelled “Reusable recycled paper.”- This box is for paper with 2 blank page. The other box labelled “Unusable recycled paper”- This is for papers with both sides used. 2 120L paper recycling bins are placed outside the staff room.
Vendors Recycle

Vendors keep used coffee powder, egg shells & vegetable peels. Green Club members collect these to use for composting in school’s Eco-Garden.
The kitchen waste from the food lab was collected and used for the compost bin.
Singapore Youth Science Fair 2014


4 students participated in the Singapore Youth Science Fair 2014 organized by the Science Teachers Association and Science Centre. They developed a compost bin project in the school.
Elementz Competition 2014


5 students participated in the Elementz Competition 2014. They developed a prototype to investigate whether green roof will lead to a cooler indoor environment. They achieved the Certificate of Commendation.
National Environment Quiz 2014


2 students participated in the National Environment Quiz organized by Nan Hua High School. The objective of the National Environment Quiz is to create awareness in our young through an exhibition and a quiz – to inform them of their responsibilities in protecting and caring for the environment as well as in keeping it clean and green.
Panasonic-NEA eco ideas challenge

OPSS was awarded a seed funding by Panasonic-NEA to initiate a Eco-garden learning trail in the school to educate students on the diversity of the school garden.
Green Wave Competition
-        Sembship
Students designed a green roof and a blue roof prototype to study the effects of reducing indoor temperatures. This would reduce the need for air conditioning and less costly.
Sembcorp Go Green Competition


Staff and students recycle newspapers, cans and plastics which are then collected by Sembwaste.
Earth Hour 2014


A lesson package comprising of lesson plan, powerpoint slides, quiz is done specifically to raise awareness of water conservation in April. We are able to reach out to all student in the school. The quiz is a useful tool as it helps to consolidate students’ learning.
Christalite Methodist Home
(CIP)

On 5 March 2014, members  from the Club went to the Crystalite Methodist Home to teach the residents of the Home how to make crafts using recycled materials.
Build it Green Club Junior launch


6 students participated in the Build it Green Club Junior launch organised by Building & Construction Authority. They were able to learn more about environmental sustainability and the Green Mark certification for buildings. They were also given the opportunity to interact with government officials.
Youth for Environment (YED)  2014


The Environmental Club members presented the topic on Water Conservation. Students in the audience were also given pledge cards whereby they had to write a pledge on what they can do to conserve water. The pledge cards were collected and put on a display at the school foyer during the YED week.
A school wide newspaper collection was carried out during the YED week to promote recycling efforts among the students.
Secondary 1 Seashore Ecology Project Work


Students are involved in a year-long project on caring for the environment, specifically, our shoreline. They study Man’s impact on the environment. They visit the Pasir Ris mudflat to study the organisms found there and do beach cleaning as part of their CIP. Finally, students do a graded oral presentation to wrap up their project. This is a meaningful project that shows Man’s negative impact on our environment and the urgent need for the 3Rs. Students are especially stunned by the amount of litter on the mudflat and from their reflections, most indicate they would put in more effort to recycle instead of throwing away things.
NEA Environment Champions Workshop


Sec 1 green club members were sent for the training every year to equip themselves with more knowledge on the environmental issues and to help environment club to help spread the message of environmental conservation in the school after the workshop.
School green audit
Green club members audit the school and submitted a report on the school’s environmental efforts. Through this, students gain a better understanding of the environmental impact on the school.
Water TAP workshop and competition


4 students attended this workshop organised by PUB and Woodgrove Secondary School. The objectives are to allow students to learn more about water conservation and the Singapore Water Story. They achieved 4th position.
Eco-Garden in OPSS


Designed an activity booklet to complement the OPSS eco-garden learning trail to introduce the various aspects of the garden.
Panasonic –NEA Environment Champions (Schools) Industry Module Programme
3 students participated in this programme whereby they attended the Experiential Learning Module for ‘eco ideas’ Challenge 2014 to learn more about the eco-friendly features of the HDB Modular House.
CCA Orientation Day (whole day)


Green club set up booths to attract Sec 1 students. There are 3 stations: 1 station is to use ipad to answer an environmental quiz, 1 station is the school eco-garden tour led by green club members, 1 station is recycled craft and terrarium making.
Teachers’ Day Celebration


Students will use recycled crafts to make gifts made of polymer clay for their teachers.
Engineering Innovation Programme

Students use recycled materials combined with technology to design and construct a prototype for an umbrella dispensing system.
Panasonic Experiential Learning Programme

Students learn about the real-life environment applications in a factory and encourage them to apply 'eco ideas' in their daily lives.
OPSS ‘No Plastic Bag Day’


Students are encouraged bring their own reusable bags on 29th August 2014 for their purchases in the school. They are discouraged from using excessive plastic bags which is non-biodegradable and may lead to pollution.
Green Wave 2014
-        NParks

Student Councillors planted a tree given by NParks in the school garden. Students enjoy this tree-growing activity. They become more aware of the need to take care of their environment.
Environment Corner


An environmental corner has been set up in the school with posters and articles to raise awareness of conserving the environment. Crafts made of recycled materials by students are also displayed there.
Outreach to a community library 


To promote OPSS Eco garden learning trail, a public outreach programme was carried out in September 2014 at Yishun Community Library. Posters of the eco garden were put on display as well as books relating to gardening.
Partnership with Parents


To raise awareness of composting and reducing the usage of plastic bags, the compost bin project and the use less plastic bag pledge were introduced to participants of OPSS Parent Support Group. Parents were encouraged to bring suitable food waste to contribute to the compost and to use less plastic bags.
OPSS Environment Policy


The OPSS Environment Policy was created since 2013 to reflect the environmental values of OPSS staff and students.
OPSS E-waste strategy


OPSS collected used ink cartridges and electronic equipment such as computers and printers and sold to a recycling vendor.
Singapore Garden Festival 2014


OPSS was invited to set up a booth at the Singapore Garden Festival to showcase our school eco garden learning trail. Green club students put up poster displays and conduct sharing with the public.
ABC Water Learning Trail

Members of the Environment Club went on the ABC Waters Learning Trail at Lorong Halus Wetland, Serangoon Reservoir in July 2014. They learnt more about the transformation of the wetland and testing water quality.
Curriculum lessons incorporating 3R messages were held throughout the year.

Students were more aware of the environmental issues and the need for conservation.
National Youth EnvirOlympics Challenge (NYEC) 
Orchid Park Secondary School participated in the National Youth EnvirOlympics Challenge (NYEC) organized by Tetra Pak. Students recycled Used Beverage Cartons to make a structure.
NParks ‘Tree for Life’ Photography competition

30 students participated in the Tree for Life Photography competition organized by Nparks. Students learn various ways of tree appreciation through photography.
World Environment Day 2014

Environmental Club members prepared an online World Environment Day 2014 lesson package including PPT slides and a quiz on environmental issues on the school’s e-learning portal for the school population to read and take part in the quiz.
